It’s Awards season again

The Tin Ducks (WA) and Chronos Awards (Vic) are both open for nominations. FableCroft has a few eligible works from 2011.

The Chronos short story ones are on the wonderful list over here (and instructions on how to nominate are here). My name appears there with Alex for our Vorkosigan reviews as well, which is nice 🙂

The Tin Ducks are a little trickier but here they are in screen shot.

Please particularly note that the Natcon Fifty committee put out a fantastic souvenir book for the convention last year, which is eligible for Best Unpaid or Fan Production.

I’d also like to recommend the Nightsiders collection by Western Australian author Sue Isle (Twelfth Planet Press) – not sure whether it’s eligible for Professional Long Written (it’s four interconnected short stories) or Professional Production. WA fan Terri Sellen put together a very cool book trailer for the book as well, which is eligible for Fan Production! And of course, Twelfth Planet Press has been doing great things in 2011.

And finally, I’ve been assisting with the maintenance of the ASIF website for some months now, of which Alisa Krasnostein is managing editor, which is once more eligible for Best Unpaid or Fan Production.

There are many other great Western Australian works out there from 2011, including podcasts such as Galactic Suburbia, Live and Sassy and Panel2Panel, some excellent novels, collections and short stories. Please seek them out and nominate those you think deserving! Oh, and if anyone has links to photos of the Art Show from Swancon last year, I’d love to link it here so we can be reminded of what and who might be eligible in both Fan and Professional art!

Tin Ducks – stuff I done last year!

Apparently it’s time for Tin Duck nominations again! 

From the Swancon 2010 website:

Nominations are now open for the 2010 Tin Duck Awards, the annual Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation (WASFF) Achievement Awards for WA writers and artists. The awards will be presented at Swancon 2010.

Works eligible to be nominated must have been "published" (be it written work, art or any form of performing art or convention running) in the 2009 calendar year, and must not have been voted upon in any previous Tin Duck Award. Works will be validated by the Tin Duck Awards Committee, and may be moved to a different category than nominated for if deemed necessary. Any works nominated without a category may be deemed invalid by the Awards Committee. Nominations may be subject to short-listing if necessary in categories with large number of nominations.

Multiple nominations may be submitted for any category. Nominations must be received no later than midnight 22th February 2010, and can be submitted by emailing tinducks-2010@swancon.com.au or snail-mail it to:

The award categories are:

• Best WA Professional Long Written Work

New Ceres Nights (shortlisted for the Best Anthology category of the Aurealis Awards) is eligible for Best Professional Production.

Sue Isle’s stories "Candle to the Devil" (New Ceres Nights) and "Paper Dragons" (Shiny #5, recently shortlisted for the YA Short Story category of the Aurealis Awards) are eligible for Best Short Written Work.

Also from New Ceres Nights:

"Fair Trade" — Stephen Dedman (Best Short Written Work).
"Blessed Are the Dead That the Rain Falls Upon" — Martin Livings (Best Short Written Work)
"Smuggler’s Moon" — Lee Battersby (Best Short Written Work).
(Unable to get clarification on whether works over 7500 words – such as Martin’s story – should be classed as Long Work – I thought that meant novel, but could be wrong!) ETA: Clarification received – Long Work will probably only mean work over 17500 words, so none of these 🙂

Given the amount of reviews I’ve been writing, please consider ASif! for Best Unpaid or Fan Production.

And it’s possible that I could be eligible for Best Unpaid or Fan Written Work (for a body of reviews – search Wessely on ASif! if you like 🙂 ).

I’d also like to suggest that Amanda Rainey is eligible for the Best Unpaid or Fan Art Work for her DESIGN of the Siren Beat/Roadkill TPP double novella cover (that’s right, she did that gorgeous design for free!).

And the launch of New Ceres Nights at Swancon last year, with coffee, cupcakes and gorgeous costumes is eligible for Best Unpaid or Fan Production.

 Wheee! Apparently we’re on it 🙂 However, I can’t VIEW it! My Adobe 9 Reader mustn’t be compatible… 😦 Will go look on other computer and see…

But anyway, here’s the details – vote if you’re eligible!

Tin Duck voting forms are now available! 

Completed ballots may be mailed to Tin Ducks Awards Committee, PO Box 555, Inglewood WA 6932. Posted ballots need to be postmarked no later than 3rd April 2009. Alternatively, completed ballots may be placed in the ballot box in the Registration Area of the Convention before 5pm, Saturday 11th April 2009. Voting is open to full and supporting members of Swancon. Voting is by Optional Preferential Voting. Number as many boxes, as you wish in each category, in the order of your preference, 1 being your first choice. You do not have to number every box. The Tin Duck Committee reserves the right to make further decision on the validity of nominees. Ballot form must be clearly signed by the voter. Only one ballot form per person.
