Nice review of ASIM Best of SF anthology

From Specusphere:

With thanks to Satima and Joan!

The beginning of the review says:

This little gem of an e-book contains sixteen stories, one poem and one non-fiction piece drawn from the first eighteen issues of ASIM. Tehani Wessely and her team (artwork is by Ian Hughes, Les Petersen and Brian Smith) are to be congratulated on a well-presented anthology. My main regret is that finances didn’t extend to a print run.

Western Australia, the sage Part II

This is moving very very quickly. Since Saturday, we have discovered that I can get a job, full removal (including flights for the family) and subsidised housing pretty much anywhere outside of Perth, if not for Term 4 then for start in 2008. And no requirement to stay in said role for more than the length of the contract (with no penalties!) even if the contract is one term. Way to get our stuff moved, no?!

HOWEVER – today, husband gets phone call from employment agency for HIS job. Oh, by the way, because you are going to a supervisor role, the company pays relocation costs. EEK! Suddenly, Perth is on the radar. Subsidised housing, no. No travel, yes. Balance.

According to the spreadsheet (yes, we wrote it all down), we will be further in front than we are now if we move pretty much immediately to a nice suburb of Perth where we can get a four bedroom house for under $350 a week, EVEN IF I AM NOT WORKING. EVEN IF HOUSE HERE DOES NOT RENT IMMEDIATELY. This is frightening! Of course, it would be better if I was working (although not by much, as childcare eats about two thirds of my pay), and if the house was rented (again, not a bloody lot considering the mortgage, but still!), but doable.

We may be in Perth by early October. We are looking at moving to Parkwood or surrounding area (Hi Simon! I really WILL be able to stuff ASIM envelopes with you!) primarily because it is the one area I know a little in Perth (with family there, and friends) but also because of ease of access to lots of things, especially airport, and the rents seem pretty damn reasonable, considering the price of BUYING there.

We already have good friends booking their berth in the new (as yet unknown) house for four to five weeks!  Heh.

I have to get my teacher rego going. Quickly.

Life changes

And sometimes it happens out of the blue.

There’s a possibility we might relocate to Western Australia. This is, of course, despite the promises of one husband that the move to Hervey Bay would be the LAST. He loves to kick my chair. However, even though I’ve really made myself very comfortable here, I am actually quite excited about this.

For one, I’m originally from WA, and have not only loads of rellies over there, but lots of ASIM folk and others in the SF community I hope I’d get a chance to know better if we lived in the big brown state.

For two, we don’t HAVE to move. On paper, it seems husband can fly from Hervey Bay to Perth to meet his FIFO of Perth and we would STILL come out with more money in the hand than he currently gets living away anyway. Plus it’s a great work opportunity for him. So we’re not going to be in any rush to uproot just yet. We are considering, looking and waiting/seeing.

I’ve had a gander on and and applied for a couple of jobs, but if anyone knows of a job for someone with my skills (teacher librarian, English/SOSE, bit of business experience, ICT etc) ESPECIALLY at a place that offers subsidised housing and/or moving assistance, do let me know! Not too fussed whereabouts in WA, as long as it’s got a reasonable airport 🙂

Boss Girl’s first school pic

Okay, she’s only 1 (nearly 2) so it’s not school but daycare. Still, it was taken at daycare, and we have the version that has her “classmates” too, so we’ll count it. And it’s cute! Biased? Me? Whatever do you mean?
