FableCroft News

A quick post about FableCroft’s new books, two of which are being launched at Conflux in ONE MONTH but already here and ready to be posted out!

OneSmallStepCoverdraft1. Publishers Weekly reviewed both The Bone Chime Song and Other Stories by Joanne Anderton and One Small Step, edited by me. FableCroft’s first reviews at PW, which is very exciting!

2. Pre-orders are available at the FableCroft website, and all orders placed now will be posted over the next week – that’s right, before the launch!

3. You can also try your luck to win a copy at Goodreads – details at the FableCroft website.

4. We re-released Tansy Rayner Roberts’ first novel, Splashdance Silver, in ebook a few weeks ago – it’s a fantastically fun read, and super cheap! The sequel novel, Liquid Gold, will also be out soon.

5. Not, strictly speaking, a FableCroft announcement, but I’m off to Hobart on Thursday to help launch Tansy’s newest book, A Trifle Dead (by Livia Day, Tansy’s alter ego). Join us if you can at the Hobart Bookshop, 5.30pm Thursday 28 March, 2013!

6. And I’m merrily working on a couple of other projects that I will be announcing soon – fun!

An exciting kind of week

We’ve had a fairly exciting few days around here. First of all, both of FableCroft’s April-release books have arrived nice and early, and they look lovely! It’s a relieved sense of excitement to see the books all printed and fantastic, and ready to go out into the world! The official launch is not until April 26, but if you pre-order before March 31, I’ll send the books out in the first week of April :)

Screen shot 2013-03-19 at 2.53.10 PMLate last week we also had finance approved for the house we’re buying! Yes, yes, we just moved (into a rental) but we’ve been looking to buy and finally found a great house that we fell in love with – it has an indoor heated pool! And a new kitchen! And a nice yard! And rooms! Lots of rooms! We’re really looking forward to living in it (although not, so much, the moving AGAIN!).

Would someone like to let me know where this year is going? It’s the second half of March, it’s nearly EASTER, and the holidays are rocketing on not long after that! In which we have Mum & Dad visiting, and Conflux happening, and oh my goodness, time does fly!!

Running on the spot

Feels like I’m constantly trying to get things done right now and for every step forward I make, another ten steps appear! Top of the list is the house hunting, which is proving depressing. Have applications in on a few places, one that we’ve now been waiting over a week to hear from (and of course, it’s the one we really like, and knowing our luck, we’ll get it, after I’ve spent a week stressing and wasting time looking at a bunch of others!). Have had one rejection so far, and am at the point of looking to a) pay more money, b) look in less convenient suburbs and c) think about smaller places. None of these things are ideal, but we’re getting a bit desperate. Did I mention we’re supposed to be out by next Friday? Ha.

Another thing taking up a lot more time than anticipated is the Aurealis Awards. Entries closed in late December, but we’re still trying to chase down works that haven’t been received by the judges. We’ve noticed particularly that some publishers entered works that they then didn’t send, which is a bit unfair to the authors who think their works have been considered. So I’ve been doing lots of emailing to entrants, and sometimes to the authors of works, to try to ensure fairness and inclusivity, which are big goals of mine for the Awards. And we’re getting there! But it’s been time consuming.

I’ve also been doing a lot of FableCroft work – got a little roll on over the past week, and FINALLY managed to get ebook versions of Epilogue and After the Rain up at both Amazon Kindle and Wizard’s Tower Books. I’m very pleased to have finally jumped that hurdle, and look forward to bringing out the 2013 books in all formats much more quickly!

And that’s what ELSE I’ve been doing! Working on 2013 books! FableCroft announced that we’ll be doing Joanne Anderton’s debut short story collection, The Bone Chime Song and other stories (April), and I’ve been working on One Small Step as well, and a couple of other projects that we’re not quite ready to announce yet, but will be really soon!

We’ve also had lots of socialising (the kids mostly) and more visits from the Merrick-Woods family, and swimming lessons started this week, which is a chunk out of each morning. But the house isn’t a hideous mess, the washing etc seems relatively up to date, and I’m not yet a blibbering mess on the floor. Have I started packing? Erm, no, not really. I keep thinking I should though! Next!

A brief FableCroft update

I’ve been noodling away on FableCroft Publishing jobs behind the scenes over the past couple of months, snatching time when I can! Managed to get a little run on things this week, so we had some announcements:

TsaDScover1. Christmas special on To Spin a Darker Stair by Catherynne M Valente, Faith Mudge and illustrated by Kathleen Jennings. Gift wrapped, discounted, great gift idea! Offer ends December 15.

2. I announced the (draft) table of contents for the next FableCroft anthology One Small Step. It’s very exciting!

3. I’m posting extracts from the 2009 shared world anthology New Ceres Nights that I co-edited with Alisa Krasnostein for Twelfth Planet Press, as the book is our special offer with any other purchase (either at TPP or FableCroft) – buy anything with us, and get New Ceres Nights for just $10 extra!

Right now I’m about to start edits on the One Small Step stories, and am working on two yet to be announced projects as well – lots of fun! Stay tuned for more announcements in the coming weeks.
